Power and Energy Systems research group, under Electrical Engineering, has five dominant research thrusts:

  • Development of advanced marine power systems for the US Navy.
  • Development of the world’s most rich environment for design.
  • Virtual prototyping.
  • Testing of multidisciplinary dynamic systems.
  • Incorporation of new power semiconductor technologies.
The new power semiconductor technologies are based on wide bandgap semiconductors such as GaN into high-power wide-bandwidth power converters, design and rapid prototyping of controls for power electronic systems, and design and control of hybrid power sources based on modern energy technologies such as fuel cells. The Virtual Test Bed software developed by this group ubiquitously underlies all of the group’s research activities and serves as a unifying and catalyzing influence on affiliated organizations such as the Electric Ship Research and Development Consortium and the group’s many other partners in industry and academia. The web pages on this site will inform you about the on-going research activities, laboratory facilities and equipment, and the people who carry out this research.
